NRI first Asian Mayor of Gloucester, UKTuesday, May 15, 2007
NRIs settled in the UK are climbing up the political ladder, and the latest is ex-hockey player Harjit Singh Gill who takes up his new role as Mayor of Gloucester on May 21, 2007. Gill has been politically active in Britain, holding a similar position of authority as Mayor of Barton in 1999 and 2000. His re-election as Labour city councilor for Barton and Tredworth, and. new appointment makes him the first Asian to achieve this distinction. Three years ago, he had also held the responsibility of Sheriff of Gloucester. Gill hails from Dakoha village, Doaba, Jalandhar , known for its NRI residents. He moved to the UK in 1978 at the age of 23 Harjit’s new role has sent Dakoha into celebration, and family and friends are overjoyed at his achievement. Gill played for the rest of India hockey team, and initiated the Gloucestershire Police hockey team to India a couple of years ago. His career as a hockey player started with the Punjab University, and was inspired by one of his relatives, a senior Indian hockey team player to pursue the game.
