Kerala Govt.’s Rescue Mission for NRIs in UAEThursday, August 09, 2007
In view of the approaching deadline set by the UAE Government for all illegal foreign workers to acquire a legal status or return to their country, the Kerala Government is putting together plans to help the stranded NRIs return to India. The Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs, (NORKA) has decided to provide free air tickets to Indian workers who wish to return to India under the amnesty scheme of the UAE Government. NORKA is a state government-run welfare organisation for non-resident Keralites. A few organisations and individual businessmen in Kerala have also extended their support to the cause of the hapless Indian workers by sponsoring air tickets for them. NORKA is collaborating with associations of Malyalees in the Emirates to sponsor the tickets. Emirates Airlines and Air India have offered discounted fares for the stranded NRIs who wish to return to India. Air India will operate 2 additional flights to Hyderabad via Mumbai on August 19 and 22. Of the 1.4 million NRIs in the UAE, a large percentage is engaged as contract labour. 60% of Dubai’s 1.4 million population is Indian, and 33,000 have applied to the Indian consulate for emergency certificates.
