UK Medical Service Cos Carving Niche in Bengal Medical Sector
Tuesday, March 06, 2007

The British Healthcare Mission is scouting prospects in the healthcare sector of West Bengal. Five renowned British medical service companies came here on Monday to participate in an interactive seminar with health sector players of the state.

The seminar brought about a plethora of options for both India and the UK healthcare sector. The delegates show a large inclination towards making investments in services like medical equipment, developing medical software, leveraging the benefits of the latest development in the medical field, training and overall into the public-private partnership (PPP) venture.

Also, Britain's National Health Service (NHS), the "public face" of the three publicly funded health care systems of Great Britain, is interested to take a PPP venture route with the Indian healthcare system and holding talks with the Indian Government and the Planning Commission regarding the same.

A multitude of Indian healthcare organizations have lined up to set their establishments in Britian, says one of the members of the delegation, Parminder Sunda. Around 20 to 30 organizations have already approached to the delegates but nothing has yet been finalized.

Healthcare facilities in Britain are moving on snail’s pace. Every patient is required to wait for six to eight hours to get medical treatment but the government there envisages bringing a drop in the waiting period to at least two hours by 2010, adds Sunda.

There are limited resources in Britian. This is because, the country is welcoming other organizations to come and set up their medical units in the UK.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals has already been granted permission to establish its new hospital in Britain.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals has been permitted to set its new hospital in UK. The medical service companies, that have come to scout partnership options here, will certainly go for investment in West Bengal if find anything suitable to their requirements, as told by Rob Elles, a member of the team and an expert of genetic healthcare in Britain.
