Since the Right to Information (RTI) Act came
in application, many harried people who were fed up with the treatment
they got from income tax officials known for their laidback attitude
got their work done.
But this time around, Tushar Dalvi, an NRI,
who settled in Santa Cruz a few years ago, manage to get his tax
refund.
The problem with Dalvi was he had a non-resident ordinary
account from which the bank was deducting tax at source (TDS)
on the interest accumulated on his deposits. And despite, his
filing of returns and many applications for refund with the central
international taxation department from 2002, he had not got any
answer from the I-T department.
60 year-old Dalvi has tried all he could. But, all his efforts
went futile. He even approached a chartered accountant (CA) who
asked him to dole out Rs 50,000 as service charge, which he wanted
to used for other expenses to get the job done.
Harried and harassed, Dalve then decided to take the help of
RTI Act. Last year, he approached the I-T department’s central
public information officer (CPIO) in December seeking to
know the status of his pending refund.
And soon after his visit to the concern official with RTI, his
work was done with in a week.
