The City

Lying 135 kms of the silicon capital of India, Mysore’s development into a full fledged IT hub in its own right was inevitable. With the highest literacy rate in the state, cost-effective infrastructure and almost 2000 engineering graduates every year, Mysore found technology companies tapping new sites to set up facilities in the city.

Software exports are on the rise and in tandem with the state government’s growth plans. Early birds who ventured into Mysore with a skeletal staff are expanding their facilities, as in the case of Software Paradigm which has grown from a staff strength of 3 to 400 in 6 years.

From a resident’s perspective, the royal city of Mysore offers a cosmopolitan culture with access to weekend getaways to popular resorts like Coorg (Kodagu), Ooty and Mangalore within 150-200 kms driving distance. Offering a pollution and congestion free environment, Mysore is drawing attention from real estate developers from Bangalore who foresee lucrative investment opportunities in the city.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The presence of Wipro and Infosys in Mysore encouraged other IT companies to consider Mysore as a viable option. Skill City, a syndicate of companies who are promoting the SemIndia project in Hyderabad have plans to set up a semiconductor fabrication training facility in Mysore. TCS, and Target, a Fortune 500 retail company will also invest in Mysore which would translate to 20,000 white collar jobs for the city’s graduates.

With a surge of jobs generated by these companies, local residents fear the city’s precariously balanced infrastructure may buckle if pro-active measures are not taken.

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has pledged to fund Mysore’s civic infrastructure to an extent of Rs.1, 830 crore over the next 7 years. Creating a slum-free Mysore, with parks and renovated historical structures would be the objective of the Mysore Municipal Corporation once its plan is approved after December 2007.

Mysore’s development plans include 47 kms of roads within the city and the Bus Rapid Transit System connecting the east-west and north-south corridors.  Mysore’s aviation services would improve once the airport at Mandakalli is upgraded. Similarly, the Bangalore-Mysore railway track will cut down travel time to 2 hours once the double track between the cities is laid out.

The Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor was conceived in the 1980s with plans to build 5 new cities along the expressway which would cross-subsidize the highway. After running into several hurdles, a 9.8 km stretch of the project finally opened up to traffic in June 2007.
