The City

Ludhiana’s well-known affluence stems from its throbbing cluster of industries comprising bicycle & bicycle components, hosiery goods, and machine tools. Home to some of the richest Indians in India, Ludhiana is shaking off its legacy of an unplanned dusty town to acquire a trendy, swank look. Possessing the wherewithal and the appetite for all things contemporary and fashionable, Ludhiana is the real estate developer’s dream.

No wonder then that once the Punjab state government opened its doors to private builders with the announcement of the urbanization policy, developers zoomed down to Ludhiana to develop commercial and residential properties in Ludhiana.

Ludhiana is Punjab’s largest and most centrally located city, spread over 160 sq. km with a population of 1.4 million. As host to the renowned Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana spearheaded the state’s green revolution. Other prestigious institutions include an engineering college and 2 medical colleges.

Lying between the Budha Nallah and Sutlej Rivers, Ludhiana is an important junction, well connected to Chandigarh, Ferozepur and Bhatinda.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana has taken up a number of projects to improve the city’s infrastructure to earn the title of “Role Model Corporation” in 2003 for following the best management practices.

The widening of the Chandigarh, Pakhowal and Rahon roads, the development of green belts and parking lots along the old G.T.Road and Lodhi Club Road, the construction of a bridge over the Budha Nallah and the removal of encroachments along its stretch, the beautification of the Jagraon bridge, Samrata Chowk, Chaura Bazar and Clock Tower, construction of an indoor stadium, skating rink and squash court, improvement of street lights, a multi-storeyed parking complex on Ferozepur Road and other areas around the city are projects pursued by the municipality involving an investment of almost Rs.37 crore.

Efforts are on to streamline traffic within the city with the construction of ROB in different sections of the city, widening of more roads and development of new bypass roads and bridges on the Budha Nallah, creation of new parking lots in Feroze Gandhi market, and the construction and up gradation of fire brigade services.

The Ludhiana Draft Master Plan 2003 – 2021 seeks to address the issues of unplanned growth of the city and find a solution to the concerns regarding water, power, sewage and transport services looming over the city.

The Empowered Committee on Industries, Punjab gave its nod to a Special Economic Zone for Ludhiana covering 2500 acres and a Textile Park at a cost of Rs. 1800 crore. A research and development project for agricultural products is also on the anvil with a budget outlay of Rs. 92 crore. Quark Inc. has proposed a SEZ in the Jalandhar-Ludhiana-Hoshiarpur corridor, for which approval is expected.
