Triangle Gujarati Association (TGA) is a registered tax-exempt
non-profit organization, created in 1988, to serve the Gujarati
community in the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area of North
Carolina. The goal of the organization is to promote and maintain
the identity of Gujarati Culture and preserve our heritage. However,
the Gujaratis in the Triangle area were already enjoying the programs
such as Holi, picnic, and Diwali a long before that
During the early 80¹s, the cultural programs were organized
at one of the Wake County community centers. The Holi program
at that time consisted of a very short cultural program followed
by Dandia-Raas with music on cassette tape. As the Gujarati community
grew, the location changed from the small community centers to
Jordan Hall in Cary. Also, the length of the programs as well
as number of participants increased.
At present, our Gujarati community has grown much larger, and
we have moved again from Jordan Hall to Hindu Bhavan and Cary
Community Center. The TGA organizes several programs during the
year. The year starts with the Holi program, which is attended
by approximately 500-600 Gujaratis.
100+ children and adults demonstrate their talents during the
Holi cultural program. Also, over 1,000 people participate in
the Navaratri and Sharad Purnima programs with live music. In
addition to the regular programs such as Holi, Navaratri, Diwali,
and the picnic, the TGA also invites artists from India for plays
and musical programs.
TGA also has a Youth organization called TGA Youth Group. TGA
Youth Group has their committee as well as TGA liaison. They organize
several events such as Ski trip, Lock-In, Beach trip, Youth Semi-Formal
during the year. In addition, our youth group also gets involved
in several community service programs such as March of Dimes and
Adopt-a-highway.
All of these programs have become successful due to the support
from our Gujarati community in the Triangle area. We hope that
the same support will continue for a long time to come. Please
come forward and take active participation in your organization.
