NRIs in US Keen to Participate in India’s ProgressTuesday, September 25, 2007
The ongoing Indian festival in New York has enthralled audiences through its cultural and business sessions and evoked curiosity and a desire within the NRI community to participate actively in India’s growth. Over 400 NRIs in the US interacted in sessions on investment in health and education conducted by eminent Indian political and business leaders. The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath lauded the intellectual and entrepreneurial spirit of the NRI during the event. The Minister pinned down the depth and strength of India’s legal structure as the backbone to the country’s progress. In an interactive session, he said that India’s exchange rate would be allowed to follow its natural curve, and that the government would not regulate it to suit certain sectors. The Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was addressed by a distinguished panel of speakers. While Sam Kannappan of ABI Enterprises spoke on issues related to investing in India, Parag Saxena of Vedanta Capital elaborated on simplifying procedures for business in India. Professor CK Prahlad shared his vision for India in 2022, which he said, had the strength to influence the world order through its economic prowess. Rajat Gupta shared his views on public private participation and the Pan IIT group, and Thomas Abraham called for more active involvement of the youth, simplifying foreign donor laws and organizing medical and educational conferences for NRIs. Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs reassured the NRIs in the US of the protection of the interests of overseas Indian workers, marriage issues and fee-related issues of NRI students.
