Amnesty Offer Extended for Illegal Workers in UAETuesday, September 04, 2007
The UAE Government has extended a three-month amnesty for illegal migrants in the kingdom, and a lakh of Indians would be availing of the scheme, as per latest reports. This includes those Indians who have exited the UAE and those who are still employed in the country. The UAE had given a three-month amnesty period to regularize their stay in the country or exit by the 1st of September. The Government has extended the amnesty for those whose applications have been processed but are unable to leave owing to non-availability of air tickets. 2.78 illegal workers regularized their legal status over the 3-month amnesty period, according to UAE officials. Indians formed the majority of the 1.84 lakh workers who availed the amnesty during the period, with 70% of these from Andhra Pradesh. The Indian Consulate in Dubai received 41,050 applications for Emergency Certificates, of which 40,190 had been printed, and 37,650 delivered so far. The local authorities handed over 29,710 passports of Indian nationals to the consulate and 20,145 had been handed over so far.
