Admission row in NRI quotaWednesday, October 11, 2006
Medical admission in Maharashtra is under a cloud again this time over admissions into NRI quota. A week after the body that monitors admission process held that 17 colleges had flouted rules while admitting students - the Nagpur bench has given the private medical colleges a clean chit. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has held that wards of NRI's qualify for admission under the NRI quota in these colleges. Last week the admission of these students was cancelled by the Pravesh Niyantran Samiti, a body that looks into admission process of medical and dental colleges. According to the Samiti, the 17 colleges were admitting many students who did not fall in the NRI category in exchange for hefty fees - running into lakhs of rupees. Qualification row The Samiti says that according to the Supreme Court only children of NRI parents can qualify for admission under NRI quota. But the court has held that even "wards" that is children sponsored by NRI's qualify. The reason why the private medical and dental colleges have moved so fast in this matter is because its only in this quota that they can charge the fees they want, otherwise they have to adhere to a prescribed fee structure. And if they are unable to find the right candidates to these seats they are transferred to the general category. So its now upto the Pravesh Niyantran Samiti whether to accept the order or go in appeal against it. Source: http://www.ndtv.com/morenews/showmorestory.asp?slug=Admission+row+in+
