Pension Scheme under Deliberation for Non Resident Keralites Monday, May 28, 2007
With two million of Kerala’s population employed overseas, the state Government has decided to extend social security benefits to these citizens who have contributed so significantly to its economy. A contributory pension scheme is under way for all non-resident Keralites, which would be paid out after a minimum lock-in period. Currently being tested, it will soon be placed before the state assembly for approval once the law department endorses it. 90% of the non-resident population of Kerala is based in the Gulf. Most of them are employed on short contracts there, returning home with savings that do not sustain for long. Manjalamkuzhi Ali, a member of the legislative assembly proposed the pension fund, keeping the plight of such workers in view. The legislation could see the light of day this June, if all procedures proceed as per plan. Assistance is being sought from the centre to fund the scheme, as also from tour operators, travel agents and cargo agents whose business rests on the non-resident Keralites traveling abroad.
