Brighter Prospects Bring NRIs Back HomeWednesday, May 16, 2007
India's pulsating economy is reversing the brain drain, with thousands of professionals from the Silicon Valley returning home. The slowdown in the technology sector in the US is leading many NRI professionals to reorganize their career goals and head back home where opportunities are waiting to be tapped. Approximately 60,000 NRIs are back in India, says a study by the Indus Entrepreneurs Group. This has been the highest exodus of sorts from the Silicon Valley. The numbers have been growing steadily, with 15-20,000 returnees in 2003, and about 40,000 in the last 4 years. The flow of investment capital to India from Silicon Valley venture capital firms has also grown proportionately. A host of such firms have set up operations in Mumbai , with investments amounting to USD 2 billion in new and established ventures during September 2005 to August 2006. As per the Indus report which quotes a study by Anna-Lee Saxenian of the University of California-Berkeley and by Duke University, Indians comprise 15% of all start-ups in the Silicon Valley. Interestingly, 53% of personnel in the science and engineering fields in the Silicon Valley were of foreign origin, and a fourth of companies established in the US by immigrants in the last 10 years were by Indians. The return of NRIs has created a new arena of services back home, with entrepreneurs and middlemen setting up relocation services and offering a platform for potential employees and employers to interact.
