Dissatisfied with unreasonably low wages, construction workers
in Dubai, mainly Indians protested and stopped rush hour traffic
on the city’s main highway, demanding a Dh2 (Rs. 24) hike
in their daily wages of Dh25 (Rs 301)
Started at around 8am in the morning, the protest went for near
about two hours, said Lieutenant Riyad Al Shafi, representative
of Dubai Police Human
Rights Department.
The monthly salary provided by the employers is not enough to
meet our expenses, claimed protestors. They further complained
about their bad living conditions in labor camps.
Police moved the workers away from the main road and contacted
the Dubai Member of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs
to see into the matter and take necessary measures regarding the
same.
The officials asked the protestors to choose any five representatives
to put the problem before the company and the authorities. We
have contacted the authorities to sort out the matter, said Officials
of the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
