Indians Make the Largest Immigrant Group in CanadaTuesday, March 13, 2007
According to a survey done in Canada, Indian immigrants, who are at number two position among the immigrants, will top the chart by 2009, said Ted Menzies, Canada's parliamentary secretary to the minister for international trade. Acknowledging the contribution of Indian immigrants, he said that over 700,000 people of Indian origin have made Canada their home. The minister is here in India in place of International Trade Minister David Emerson, who couldn’t make it to come due to illness. India is at the top of their priority list, he said, that Canada has an ambitious and targeted approach for India within the global commerce strategy. According to the official, Canada’s export to India (valued at $1.7 billion), has increased by 54-percent- the highest increase in 15 years, where as the merchandise trade between the two countries stood at $3.6 billion in 2006 Menzies also talked about Indian firms like Birla, ICICI Bank and Satyam Computers who are investing in Canada and said his country would like to enhance the Indian investment in Canada five-fold by 2010. India's economy growth, which is facing lack of infrastructure, seeks an investment of $320 billion over the next 10 years. Commenting on that, he said, Canada can definitely help India in infrastructure as his country has many famous firms that deal in construction, architecture, design, engineering and telecommunications.
