Himachal Pradesh to Attract Overseas Investments, Film UnitsMonday, March 19, 2007
In order to boost tourism sector, Himachal Pradesh plans to attract overseas investments and various film units to promote its tourism industry, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said. Addressing a two-day long international conference on ‘Cutting Edge Research in Tourism – New Directions and Challenges’, he said that eco-tourism development would attract film units to shoot in the mesmerizing scenic locales of Himachal Pradesh. He further added that in order to promote sustainable tourism, private investment, employment generation and new concepts to promote tourism has been worked out for the state. The State’s tourism industry growth can be witnessed from the fact that more tourists than State’s population are visiting Himachal Pradesh, which also includes more than two lakh overseas visitors. The chief minister also informed that they are working on attracting tourists in all the months of a year and that the State wants to attract tourists to even its tribal places and national park areas. He also stressed on developing pilgrimage tourism besides utilizing the rich cultural heritage of the state for promotional activities. The government is working on to give tourism a new direction to explore the immense natural resource for the tourism activities. Virbhadra also informed that integrated tourism development circuits valued at Rs. 62.76 crore are underway while eight new tourist destinations at Chindi, Jhatingri, Janjehali (Mandi district), Shoja and Outer Seraj (Kullu district), Rajgarh (Sirmour district), Chanshal and Sungri-Sharaikoti (Shimla districts) are being developed in the remote areas. Going by the chief minister address, who even talked about proper marketing, promotion and positive image building of the state, it is clear that he is serious about taking Himachal Pradesh’s tourism to a new high. The meet also saw slew of distinguished personalities from India and abroad gracing the occasion.
