Government to conduct survey on overseas KeralitesWednesday, March 14, 2007
India will conduct the first major survey to count the number of non-resident Keralites (NRKs) working in different nations this month and the report will be made public by July. The government has given a grant of Rs 14.7 million to the Migration Research Unit, which is part of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) in Kerala for this survey. The study is being conducted for the Kerala government and is funded by the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department. The survey will be headed by S Irudayarajan, who along with noted demographer K C Zachariah had carried out the first survey on non-resident Keralites (NRKs) in 1998 and the second one in 2003. The field work for this survey will be done by the Kerala Statistical Institute, which will cover 10,000 households from 200 village councils. The institute has also tied up with few institutes from Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra to conduct studies on the migration trends. However, even Minister for Overseas Indians Affairs, Vayalar Ravi, has encouraged for this kind of survey for non-resident Keralites (NRKs). According to estimates, more than two million Keralites are currently working outside the country of which close to 90 percent of them are in Gulf. Where as, Kerala’s total number of emigrants had increased from 1.36 million in 1998 to 1.83 million in 2003. And over five million Indian workers are working in the Gulf of which Kerala accounted for 55 percent of the total outflow of migrants from India to the Middle East. The survey will include studies on recruitment agencies and their functioning. It will also have a manual on pre-departure training for all those going abroad in search of work so that they are don’t face with any difficulties there.
