Women are fast emerging as great political leaders and business persons in Asia, especially India, but have been under represented in a national level government, as according to a US group dedicated to the region. Despite all this, women are even so becoming important political force in several countries and coming out of their old image of have born for the household chores. The world has seen a slot of notable government or opposition women leaders such as Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi and India's ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi. Nowadays, more and more women want to participate in political activities in Asia through quota system or legislation, as according to the Asia Foundation. The countries like India and Pakistan have come up with quotas which reserves more than 30 per cent seats in local government for women. Another example has been set up by Indonesia, which enacted laws encouraging a similar percentage of candidates in political party lists, Carol Yost, director of the foundation's women's empowerment programme, told the agency. The Asia Foundation scrutinized the improvements made in reform of laws and policies concerning women in the region on account of global pressure and actions by Asian women group themselves. Voter education programs in many countries got a huge success in its target of making women aware of their voting rights thereby increasing the number of women casting votes, said the Asia Foundation. 50 percent of respondents of a recent survey conducted by the foundation shared the view to give equal rights to women to fight for political leadership especially in the countries like Afghanistan, where women rights were strictly curtailed under the extremist Taliban group during its five-year rule up to 2001. Most women have benefited a lot through different training programs concerning to bring improvement in the political scenario for women. Some Asian countries are seeing extreme pressure by women group asking to include more women on party lists. Women are also demanding that political parties state their platform for addressing women's priority concerns.
