Indians in US Lobby for Revision in Immigration BillThursday, June 14, 2007
Indians in the US are lobbying hard for legislation that would enable them to stay on permanently in that country. The proposed immigration bill supported by the President of the US does not provide for family-based visas, H1B visas and green cards, says the US-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), which is fighting for reform in the immigration bill. The Committee had expected inclusions in the bill which would allow highly qualified and skilled Indians to stay on permanently in the US. The proposed bill, however, would allow 12 million illegal immigrants from across the world, including 300,000 Indians, citizenship in the form of amnesty. The USINPAC is in favour of amendments that would ensure family-based immigration. The group is writing to every Senator to support an employer-based merit system which would have skilled professionals being granted green cards on the recommendation of their employers. USINPAC will persist with its agenda with all pressure groups within Capitol Hill for a better deal for the 2.5 million strong Indians in the US.
