Monday, January 15, 2007: Dr. Binay R. Shetty is one of those very
committed NRIs with a burning desire to play a role in India’s
burgeoning economy. Confident of raising $100 billion overseas for
investment in India’s roads, railways, homes and education,
Dr. Shetty’s business interests overseas encompass the health
sector. He has been honoured by the Abu Dhabi Government with the
Abu Dhabi Award as a philanthropist.
The question is: is the Indian Government listening?
Efforts by such entrepreneurs would encourage others to follow
suit, and a consolidated effort on the part of our NRIs could
send the growth rates soaring.
Doublespeak on the part of the Indian Government often de-motivates
well-intending investors. Bowing down to political pressure at
the cost of development has been the bane of successive Indian
governments, but if this Government is really serious, it must
ensure the right platform for investment.
Dr. B.R. Shetty was also honoured by
Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by President of India
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on the concluding day of the Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas for 2007, New Delhi. Dr. Bavaguthu
Raghuram Shetty better known as Dr. B.R.Shetty is founder Partner,
Managing Director & CEO of NMC group in UAE.
On January 6, 2006, the Global
Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO)
bestowed Dr. B. R. Shetty with the Pravasi Bharatiya Community
Service Award 2006, for his service to the community. GOPIO’s
Pravasi Bharatiya Community Service Awards have been established
to honor those NRIs and PIOs who have provided significant community
and public service to the Indian Diaspora across the globe and/
or to India.
