Wednesday, January 10, 2007: 7th January 2007 marked the gala
of the Fifth
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas with all pomp and show. Addressing
the gathering of NRIs and PIOs on the second day of the Pravasi
Bhartiya Divas in New Delhi yesterday, External Affairs Minister
Pranab Mukherjee welcomed the community to play a vital role in
the balanced economic development of the country.
Outlining infrastructure, agriculture, education, drinking water
and health as areas where NRI
investment would be welcomed, Mukherjee said their
expertise, knowledge, experience and capital could contribute
immensely.
The Minister expressed concern over the declining contribution
of agriculture to India’s GDP, and urged the conclave to
take up issues of processing and marketing of farm products, and
enabling the farmer to be less weather-dependent. The rural economy
could be further strengthened with inputs in education, health,
drinking water and sanitation.
Acknowledging the current lack of infrastructure to propel the
desired growth rate, “aggressive investment” in this
sector coupled with FDI and latest technology in the upgrading
of ports, airports, highways, transport and urban infrastructure
was stressed on by the Minister.
Appreciating the experience and expertise acquired by Indians
overseas, Mukherjee urged them to direct their efforts in enhancing
the quality of education in India, to match up to a more competitive
environment.
The Minister also sought investment in Research and Development
to provide more opportunities for innovation and technology development
in India.
