Recognising the contribution to the Indian economy made by 25
million strong NRI
community spread across 130 countries, Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh has concrete plans up his sleeve to encourage them
to further discover their roots and extend their branches.
To make investment
in India a less laborious process for Indian community
abroad, a facilitation centre is on the cards. This centre would
be jointly set up by Indian government and representatives of
Indian industry. Addressing the inaugural session of the three-day
Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas, Singh said the centre would serve
exclusively as a source of advisory services for overseas Indian
investors.
Overseas Indian workers will also get support from the Indian
government through the proposed Central Council for the Promotion
of Overseas Employment. With the demographic profile undergoing
changes in terms of skill, the government is considering setting
up a professional body to provide support in overseas employment.
India needs to be seen as “a provider of skilled manpower”,
said Singh.
Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vyalar Ravi also reassured
the NRI community of plans to sign agreements with other countries
on social security issues. Such an agreement with
Belgium
is currently in place.
