Punjabi NRIs Now Heartfelt for their LandMonday, February 19, 2007
Though not with their motherland, NRIs will always be Indians in spirit. This is indeed clearly evident by their growing interests to invest in their state. The example has been set up by non resident Punjabis who have shown a larger inclination towards their home affairs than before. Economic development of the country is believed to be one of the major reasons encouraging NRIs. Some point it towards the likelihood of NRIs getting voting rights. And, no far behind in the list are efforts of Indian Government. But, certainly, the bold global Punjabis, known for their ability to reach green pastures, are now looking forward to return back to roots.Recently, the International Punjabi Chamber for Service Industry (IPCSI) brought NRIs on a single platform to acquaint themselves with new investment prospects. A lot of development is required in the area of infrastructure and other sectors of service industry in North India. The states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh are on top demanding the progress, says the conference that addresses the cause titled 'Global Investors Conference for Infrastructure Development'. The event took place in the city on January 11, 2007 seeking governmental participation from the northern states, prominent real estate developers and potential NRI investors. NRIs are introduced to the prospective areas of investments and the benefits of public-private partnership (PPP) platform. The latter has certainly made inbound investments easier by streamlining the legwork and time for sanctions. Private sector players have been asked to participate much actively in developing public infrastructure and other facilities thereby making the service industry a critical segment of the region’s economy. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has already set up a ‘Special Cell’ for the welfare of NRIs in the Chief Minister Office. NRIs involved in any dispute over property or marriage matters can resolve their issues or file for petition through a single e-mail or a simple phone call. All they require is just to contact the NRI cell of the Punjab Police which has been especially made for the welfare of NRIs. The cell is bringing more modifications in its services making the process more efficient for NRIs. Recently, the Cell also started a NRI Radio helpline to resolve the issues of Canada-based NRIs. Relatives of NRI victims also have the permission to approach the cell on their behalf. The cell has solved 932 complaints since its formation in 2004. The issues are more based on property and money. Following in are the marital cases, theft, and false allegations, says officials handling the cell.
