There are over 8,000 Indian professors
imparting knowledge in university campuses across the United States.
Most of them are enjoying honorable status in their respective
fields and endeavoring to take international economy to peak.
The list includes the known names like Amartya Sen of
Harvard University and Jagdish Bhagwati of New York's
Columbia University.
Indians are always known for their academic excellence and vast
knowledge, the fact which is felt all the way to International
Monetary Fund (IMF), where the first and the youngest person of
Indian origin bagged the respectable position of chief economist
at IMF.
CK Prahalad, a globally recognized business guru, who
teaches business administration at the University of Michigan,
has been named among the top 10 management thinkers of the world.
Talk of any discipline, Indians are excelling everywhere, says
Bhagwati, a leading economist in the area of trade and development.
Not to forgot are Indians who have made their mark in field of
literature. The prominent names are Bharati Mukherjee,
Vikram Chandra and Amitava Ghosh who have been
teaching creative writing in major US universities for long.
A majority of Indians go abroad for higher education like the above
mentioned names. Most of them ended up in academic careers until
prospects opened up their way in corporate America in the 1990s.
Many Indian academics have been offered important posts in the
US educational set-up. The example has been put forward by a number
of Indians. Michael Rao is president of Central Michigan University
in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He is handling the responsibilities
of one of the country's largest campuses with 28,000 students.
He earlier served as president of Mission College in California's
Silicon Valley and chancellor of Montana State University.
