Indians Abroad Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Independence DayThursday, August 16, 2007
Indians across the globe on Wednesday celebrated the 60th anniversary of Independence Day with gusto. They participated in flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs with patriotic zeal and were seen in triumphant mood. In Beijing, Indian High Commissioner and New Delhi's envoy to China Nirupama Roy, unfurled the national tri-color at an event organized at the Indian Embassy in Beijing. After hoisting the flag, she read out the excerpts from the President’s address to the nation. It was followed by several cultural programs. Over 200 Non Resident Indians (NRIs) participated in the event to celebrate Indian Independence Day. The Ambassador marked the ceremony by planting a Cherry Blossom Sapling. In China’s commercial capital Shanghai, Consul General of India Vishnu Prakash unfurled the national flag amid the chords of National Anthem at a ceremony held at the Consulate General of India. He read out the address to the Indian community by the President of India delivered on the eve of Independence Day. In Stamford, the feeling of pride and unity could easily be seen among Indian children who mesmerized the audience gathered for India’s Independence Day celebrations held at the Indian American community in Connecticut with their patriotic songs and waving tricolors. Referring to Indo-US ties, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, the chief guest on occasion admired the way the Indian won their Independence. He also encouraged the citizens to join hands with the Indian community in celebrating the 60th anniversary of India.
