Mauritius to Celebrate 'Bihar Day' in JuneMonday, April 23, 2007
Bihar and Mauritius share a number of similarities. Showing a sincere gratitude for their outstanding contributions to the success of the country, Mauritius is soon to observe a 'Bihar Day'. The event is scheduled for the month of June and will display the positive and close cultural roots between the two places, says Mookkhswur Choonee, High Commissioner of Mauritius. Starting on June 17, the celebration will go for five days. The event is to be jointly organized by the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) and the government of Mauritius. Around 70% populace in Mauritius belongs to Bihar. They still love to speak their mother tongue and carry love for their native place, says Choonee. The Bihar government will install a life-size statue of former Mauritius Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who originally hailed from Bihar. Ramgoolam was the first prime minister of Mauritius who ran the government from 1961 to 1982. He is regarded as the father of the nation.
