India to Sign Labor Pact with Gulf NationsTuesday , April 03, 2007
India is all prepared to sign a labour pact with Kuwait after the Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi will pay a visit to the country from April 8. The minister also has plans to visit Qatar as part of his trip to the Gulf region. Close by the heels of the pact that India signed with UAE last year, the country would be signing the pact similar to that with Kuwait. Ravi will stay in Kuwait for three days and then move to Qatar, another country India is looking forward to sign the deal with. He will be meeting the ministers of both the countries. However, there are some issues that need to be resolved. For that reason, it may some time to the country to sign the final agreement with Qatar later, says Ravi. The similar pact would be signed with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman. On asking the advantage of signing the labour pact with UAE, the minister expressed confidence to have put a step forward in a direction to improve the condition of Indian laborers there. As per the Labor Pact, the salaries would be paid through a bank. Further, medical insurance has to be borne by the employer. And, workers will be entitled to a smart card that contains all essential details about the worker. Also, there is a toll free number in all labor camps. The Labour Pact will not work within a particular scope but would be widened in due course of time. It would also include unorganized workers and housemaids as well. The minister is also pondering over to improve insurance benefits offered by the companies to Non Resident Indians (NRIs). A number of south Indian states have shown large interests to establish a university for NRIs and PIOs. Surprisingly, Kerala is not among these states. However, 50% of the seats will be reserved for the children of NRIs and PIO and the remaining 50% for Indian residents. The Kerala Government has also set aside the required land and the centre of learning by overseas Indian Trusts would come up here. The complete set up will be developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs. Many NRIs in the US have already expressed their desire to be a part of such universities which would be set up by only recognized educational institutions. The seat of learning is expected to be a boon for the PIOs and NRIs living across in nearly 130 countries. Students from these countries especially the developing ones, where educational facilities are limited, look up to India for higher studies.
