V.Ramanathan wins prestigious Cozzarelli prizeMonday, March 12, 2007
Indian American scientist V Ramanathan has bagged the prestigious Cozzarelli Paper of the Year Prize for 2007 along with economist Jeffrey Vincent and Maximilian Auffhammer. The paper authored by Auffhammer, Ramanathan and Vincent took the top honor in the Applied Biological, agricultural, and Environmental Sciences category. Ramanathan and his team were selected for their work that shows reduction of air pollution could create agricultural benefits in the world's poorest regions. Their work was among the six papers awarded the Cozzarelli Paper of the Year Prize by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Ramanathan and his team findings appeared in the December issue of PNAS and it highlighted trends in Indian rice production under the influence of climate trends from the 1960s to the 1990s. The report said that the atmospheric brown clouds and greenhouse gasses have reduced rice harvests in India, which was high during the green revolution time. The slump in the harvest began since the mid-1980s that had brought back the memories of India, which earlier was not self-sufficient. Talking about his findings, Ramanathan, who did his bachelor's degree in 1965 from the Annamalai University in India, and his M.Sc from the Indian Institute of Science, said, he discovered a whole new world and it was really amazing what new findings anyone can come to, when he crosses disciplines. That was one of the most rewarding experiences.Ramanathan, who has contributed to more than 150 publications, journals and books, focuses his research on global climate dynamics, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, clouds, and the earth radiation budget. |
