Otto Schott Award for NRI scientistFriday, July 27, 2007
NRI scientist Himanshu Jain has grabbed the prestigious Otto Schott Research Award in glass research. He was honored for his contribution to the study of atomic movement in glass. He had compared the movement of atoms in glass to the wiggling of a jellyfish in water. Himanshu Jain is the director of International Materials Institute for New Functionalities in Glass (IMI) at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He won a cash prize of 25, 000 Euros which he shared with Walter Kob, University of Montpellier in France. Walter Kob was recognized for his research on the static and dynamic properties of glasses and super cooled liquids. A member of the Ceramic Society of America, Jain is known for his international collaborations with researchers from multiple disciplines like physics, chemistry, electrical and optical engineering, ceramics and others in USA, France, Germany, India, Japan, Greece, UK, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. Apart from the Otto Schott award, he has also been felicitated by other awards in glass research. The Otto Schott award is given away biennially and is administered by Donor’s Association for the Promotion of Science in Germany. The Association has also recognized Jain’s other accomplishments in unique light-induced phenomenon in glass, corrosion of glass in nuclear environments, infrared optics, photolithography, nanolithography, and other photonic applications of glass. Jain acquired his doctorate degree in Engineering Sciences in Material Science from Columbia University in 1979. His tenure at Lehigh University is followed by substantial research work at two US government research facilities. Related Readings»Abel Award for NRI Mathematician |
