As the year 2006 marked the centenary year of Satyagraha, an international
conference was held in Durban, South Africa from September 10 through
September 13, 2006; based on the principles of Gandhi’s 100th Anniversary
of Satyagraha. The event chaired by Durban’s Mayor Prof. Ari Sitas
welcomed guests, participants and speakers to the event, invited
from every corner of the globe to address the assembly of delegates.

This global event was a reminiscent of the Satyagraha movement
which was conceived a century ago by Mahatma Gandhi on the 11 September
1906 in South Africa. Since the primary aims of the conference are
to analyze and broaden the understanding of Satyagraha as a critical
approach for practice in the present context in terms of domestic
and global violence.

The conference made a conspicuous attempt to regenerate the essence
of this in cultivating a way of life which would enhance humankind’s
peaceful and prosperous survival. Even though the world lately has
witnessed many examples of peaceful transitions from oppressive
regimes to democratic states, including the building of a human
rights culture, the global conference on Satyagraha once again has
reinstated the faith of people to resolve issues through peaceful
and democratic way as shown by Gandhiji.
