Kerala Announces NRI Student Quota in State CollegesFriday, June 22, 2007
Self-funded engineering colleges falling under the government category in Kerala will reserve 15% of their seats for NRI students, announced the state Education Minister M. A. Baby at a press conference in Thiruvanthapuram yesterday.The Ministry has chalked out a payment plan for NRI students whereby they would have to deposit Rs.1.25 lakh as caution money and Rs. 1 lakh as an annual fee for these engineering colleges. The state government has arrived at a consensus with the administrative boards of 8 self funded medical colleges in Kerala on the allocation of seats and fee schedule for the ensuing academic year. Similar details are still to be worked out with the managements of medical colleges under the Inter-Church Council for Education (ICCE). As per the terms of the agreement with the 8 government colleges, an equal distribution of seats between the open merit and management quota has been decided upon. In the colleges run by minority communities, the government would appoint 10% students from the merit list. For NRI students, 15% of the seats in the management quota would be reserved for them. NRI students in Karuna Medical College, MES Medical College, and Kannur Medical College would have to make a payment of Rs.5.5 lakh as an annual fee and Rs. 5 lakh would be secured as a deposit.
